Phoenix Ties Detroit 1-1 on Senior Day
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (3-9-4, 1-5-2 Horizon League) wrapped up its 2010 season Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Detroit (7-6-5, 3-3-2 Horizon League) at a rainy Santaga Stadium. It was Senior Day for the Phoenix, as the team's five seniors were recognized before kickoff.
"I was pleased for the seniors who were able to get some solid minutes in their final game," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "The defense came up big again when we needed it to and once again we kept a team to just one goal."
After a scoreless 70 minutes, Detroit got on the scoreboard in the 71st when freshman forward Kaitlyn Quarrell netted her third goal of the season. The shot came from point blank inside the box after a pass from sophomore Nina Carter.
Green Bay responded in the 78th minute when sophomore midfielder Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.) was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Somers beat Detroit's freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins in the right side of the net to knot the score at 1-1, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Titans had perhaps their best scoring chance with a minute and a half to play in the second overtime. Detroit freshman Abby McCollum made a nice move and fired a close-range shot on goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Sturchio (Rochester, Minn.) made an impressive save to keep the Titans off the board. McCollum led all players with nine shots in the match.
Sturchio got the start between the posts for the Phoenix, playing all 110 minutes and making a career-high nine saves. Detroit outshot the Phoenix 29-10 in the contest, including 17-5 in the second half.
Sunday marked the end of five Phoenix careers, as Laura Hamer (Blaine, Minn.), (Sheboygan, Wis.), (Racine, Wis.), Catie Schultz (Green Bay, Wis.) and (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) each played her final game in a Green Bay uniform.
