GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – The Green Bay men’s tennis team (6-3) earned a pair of home victories over nationally-ranked Division III opponents on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up a busy stretch of four matches 72 hours. The Phoenix returned from Friday’s trip to Iowa to beat No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis 4-0 and No. 24 UW-Whitewater 5-0 at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.

“We’re obviously very happy to end the day 2-0,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “Four matches in three days is a lot of tennis, plus a lot of traveling. This was a good weekend to really help our players work on a lot of parts of their games and be competitive for long stretches of time.”

The opening match of the day against fourth-ranked Washington U was competitive from the start, as the Phoenix pulled out the doubles point with two wins in tiebreakers before battling to a trio of singles wins.

The Green Bay duo of Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) pulled out an intense 6-5 (4) victory at No. 1 doubles over the No. 3-ranked Bears tandem of Ross Putterman and Jeremy Bush, and sophomores Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) earned a 6-5 (3) win over Max Franklin and Collier Bouchillion at No. 3 to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

The Phoenix closed out wins at the top three singles spots to clinch the match. Tenzer made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Putterman at No. 1, Scott beat No. 26 Bush 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Gomez Islinger defeated No. 42 John Carswell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

“Washington U is definitely going to have a chance to compete for the Division III national championship this year,” Thomas said. “They came out with a lot of energy and really challenged us in doubles and singles. It was good for our guys to compete and come through in those types of situations. That’s what you need to get better.”

Green Bay once again took the doubles point against the No. 24 Warhawks, with Tenzer and Scott knocking off another top-10 doubles duo in the Division III ranks. The Phoenix teammates defeated No. 7 Byron Balkin and Ben Shkylar 6-2 at No. 1, while Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) delivered the match’s first point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

Tenzer went on to beat No. 40 Shkylar 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Gomez Islinger defeated Balkin 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 to get the Phoenix within a point of clinching the win, and Isaaks and Tebon earned simultaneous victories to deliver the 5-0 result. Isaaks fought to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brian Klein at No. 4, and Tebon beat Matt Bisbee 6-3, 6-4 in a rare singles appearance at No. 5.

Green Bay has another busy weekend ahead, traveling to Kalamazoo, Mich., and Toledo, Ohio for a trio of matches. The Phoenix first takes on Western Michigan (Friday at 6 p.m.) and  IPFW (Saturday at 9 a.m.) in Kalamazoo before heading to Toledo on Sunday at noon.
