MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– A two-goal night by Milwaukee’s Kelly Lewers helped give the Panthers a 2-0 conference win over the Phoenix on Wednesday evening at Engelmann Stadium in Milwaukee.

Lewers netted both of her goals in the second half to help improve the Panthers to 6-8-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Horizon League. The loss moved Green Bay to 4-7-4 overall and 1-4-0 in conference action.

The home team saw the better offensive chances in the opening minutes of the match, peppering the goal with six shots over the first 12 minutes. However, the Phoenix picked up momentum to close the half, spurred by a header shot from Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) in the 34th minute. The shot was deflected out, setting up a Palmadottir corner kick that allowed Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) and Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) to put consecutive shots that were blocked.

A big save by Katy Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) preserved the scoreless game in the 40th minute. Milwaukee’s Krissy Dorre sent a shot high right at Pilarzyk, who was able to punch the ball over the top of the goal. The match remained scoreless going into halftime, with the Panthers leading in shots, 12-7, and corner kicks, 6-2.

Milwaukee broke the scoreless tie in the 56th minute. A long kick by Kelsey Holbert found the foot of Kelly Lewers who chipped it over the head of Pilarzyk to put the Panthers up, 1-0. It took less than six minutes for Lewers to find the net again as she collected a deflection in the box and sent the ball past a diving Pilarzyk to add to the Milwaukee lead, 2-0.

The Phoenix saw its best scoring opportunities in the second half with three of its five shots coming on goal but it was unable to capitalize on the chances.

For the match, Milwaukee owned a 20-12 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Nine Phoenix players had at least one shot, led by two shots apiece from Palmadottir and Hartmann. Pilarzyk played the entire match, making three saves.

Green Bay returns to action on Saturday against Wright State at 1 p.m. The team will host senior day, recognizing Ahna Logan, Hekla Palmadottir, Rhiana Stelter and Renee Therrien.
