Women's Soccer Opens 2013 Season in Indiana
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The 2013 Green Bay women’s soccer team takes to the pitch for the first time this season with two road contests in Indiana. The Phoenix will face IUPUI on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before taking on Ball State at noon on Sunday.
Last season, Green Bay went 5-11-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Horizon League, just missing the conference tournament. Two players received all-conference honors, including returnee Sydney Born, who was named to the All-Newcomer Team.
The 2013 Phoenix squad features a bevy of returning talent, including five players who appeared in all 17 matches. Captain Hannah Kernen is the leading returning scorer after finishing last season with seven points (3g, 1a). Keeper Katy Pilarzyk also returns a season removed from posting a 1.48 GAA, .744 save percentage and one shutout.
Before the team headed to Indiana, GreenBayPhoenix.com caught up with head coach and captains Ahna Logan (Roseville, Minn.) and Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) to talk about the preseason and a look ahead to what fans can expect from the Phoenix this fall.
IUPUI finished last season 3-14-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the Summit League. The Jaguars topped Northern Kentucky, 3-1, in exhibition action last week. Picked to finish seventh in the conference this year, IUPUI features a young roster with 10 freshmen. It is the first ever meeting between the two squads.
Ball State will host Northern Iowa on Friday before welcoming the Phoenix. Last season, the Cardinals went 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-3 in the MAC. Another young squad, the Cardinals have 13 newcomers on the roster.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: Green Bay returns home for the Phoenix Soccer Tournament August 30 and September 1, with matches against Western Illinois (Friday, 4:00 p.m.) and Eastern Illinois (Sunday, 2:00 p.m.) at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
