GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women’s soccer team had a flurry of early chances on Saturday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium, but it was visiting Wright State (7-5-4, 4-1-1) that scored in the 12th minute and held on for a 1-0 victory in Horizon League women’s soccer action. The Phoenix fell to 4-8-4 overall and 1-5-0 in conference action.
Before Saturday’s contest, Green Bay honored a quartet of seniors – Ellen Joppe (Green Bay, Wis.), Ahna Logan (Roseville, Minn.), Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) and Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
The Phoenix fired three shots in the opening 10 minutes, including a shot by freshman Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) in the 10th minute that hit the post.
In the 12th minute, Wright State’s Emilie Fillion’ through ball connected with Kalee Thompson behind the Phoenix defense. Thompson was able to get past Green Bay keeper Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) and tap the ball into the open net for the 1-0 lead.
In the 16th minute, Schulz again nearly found the back of the net, but this time her header ricocheted off the crossbar and over the goal. Just moments later, Therrien ripped a shot toward the net but WSU keeper Brooke McCurdy made a diving save.
Green Bay led the Raiders in shots 8-6 in the opening half, but WSU used tight defense in the second half to limit the Phoenix to just one shot and prevent the equalizer.
Behle made four saves in between the posts for the Phoenix while Palmadottir, Schulz, Therrien and sophomore Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) each had two shots.
With its home schedule in the books, Green Bay visits Valparaiso on Friday night in the regular season finale.
