No. 24/25 Green Bay Overwhelms YSU to Win 10th Straight
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Increasing its winning streak to 10 games, the No. 24/25 Green Bay women’s basketball team continued its recent display of dominance and defeated Youngstown State 84-51 at the Beeghly Center on Thursday night.
The Phoenix (18-2, 9-0) gave up an uncharacteristic 19 first-quarter points to the Penguins (7-13, 3-6) and found itself trailing 19-18 after Indiya Benjamin hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer. Green Bay, however, wasted no time responding to the deficit in the second quarter and opened with a 7-0 run to lead 26-19. The runs for the Phoenix didn’t end there, as a 14-0 run to end the half helped Green Bay take a 16-point advantage (40-24) into the locker room at the midway point.
After Youngstown State was held to just five points in the second quarter, the Penguins’ momentum from the short-lived first quarter lead was completely gone, as Green Bay’s offense didn’t slow in the third. Another 8-0 run for the Phoenix took place from the 9:21 mark to the 7:37 mark and all but diminished YSU’s hopes at a comeback, with five of the eight points coming from Mehryn Kraker.
Taking a 26-point lead into the third quarter, Green Bay didn’t slow on either end of the court and went on to defeat Youngstown State 84-51 and pick up its 10th-straight win.
Jessica Lindstrom led the Phoenix with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. She shot 7-of-9 from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Kraker had another quality night for the Phoenix, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds in 29 minutes. She also tied for the team lead in steals with two on the evening.
Caitlyn Hibner nearly finished in double digits, adding nine points in 20 minutes after burying a trio of three-pointers. She also pulled down four rebounds in 20 minutes.
Green Bay welcomed Sam Terry back to the lineup this evening, as the forward scored two points and grabbed three rebounds in six minutes. All told, the Phoenix received offensive contributions from 10 different players on the evening.
Green Bay dominated inside, outscoring Youngstown State 42-8 in points in the paint and owning a 43-25 advantage in rebounds. The Phoenix also enjoyed another spectacular night from its high-powered offense, as Green Bay scored over 80 points for the third time in four games.
The Phoenix will now take its 10-game winning streak to Cleveland, Ohio as it gears up for a matchup with Cleveland State on Saturday at noon.
