Green Bay Dominates on Both Ends of Floor, Wins Fourth Straight
VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's basketball team took part in its first action of 2017 this evening in Valparaiso, Ind., against Valparaiso (5-9, 0-3), defeating the Crusaders, 75-36, to move to 12-2 on the season and 3-0 in Horizon League play.
Valparaiso started things off on top of the Phoenix, 5-4, but Green Bay then went on a 12-1 run to close the quarter and take command of the game, leading 16-6 and forcing 10 Crusaders’ turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play.
Green Bay continued its stellar play well into the second quarter, as the Phoenix added 11 unanswered points to its run to lead things 27-6. UIC was held to just 2-of-13 in the first 15 minutes, including a 1-of-7 mark from long range. The Flames third basket did not find its way through the net until the 4:56 mark in the second quarter.
At the half, Green Bay’s point total would nearly triple the Crusaders’, with the Phoenix leading 40-15 and holding Valparaiso to just 4-of-19 from the floor. Mehryn Kraker outscored the Crusaders as a team in the opening half, with the Wisconsin native pouring in 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 19 minutes.
Valparaiso’s offense continued to struggle in the second half, as the Crusaders were only able to reach double-digit scoring numbers in the fourth quarter. Green Bay held Valparaiso to 10-of-44 (21%) from the field and went on to win, 75-36.
Kraker was the leading scorer for the Phoenix in the sixth-straight game, accumulating 22 points on a 9-of-13 effort and doling out three assists. Madison Wolf scored a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbed two rebounds in 14 minutes. All 12 Phoenix players scored in tonight's matchup for the first time this season.
The Phoenix will close out its road trip on Saturday in Chicago against UIC, taking on the Flames at UIC Pavilion at 3 p.m.
