BATON ROUGE, La. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – With the start of the 2013 NCAA Tournament less than 24 hours away for the Green Bay women’s basketball team, the Phoenix had a full slate today and an even busier Louisiana Saturday night. No. 11 seed Green Bay will battle sixth-seeded LSU on its home floor at the Pete Maravich Center tomorrow night at approximately 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
ADMINISTRATIVE MEETINGS: The day kicked off at 10 a.m. with administrative meetings at the host facility, attended by all four teams’ head coaches and a variety of other staff members. Head coach Kevin Borseth and a handful of other Green Bay athletics staff members received important information regarding the behind-the-scenes side of the tournament as well as a tour of the facility.
TAKING THE PODIUM: After a few hours off, the entire team made the trip across town to the Pete Maravich Center for the team’s press conference and practice. At 3:30, coach Borseth and seniors Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.), Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) and Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) addressed the media in a press conference prior to practice. The seniors fielded questions regarding their winning streak, success in the tournament and keys to defeating LSU. Coach Borseth covered a variety of topics including his move back to Green Bay from Michigan, scheduling non-conference opponents and mid-majors in the NCAA Tournament.
TALKIN ‘BOUT PRACTICE: Following the team’s media availability, the Phoenix took the court at the Maravich Center for the first time at 4:20 p.m. for a 90-minute practice. For the first 15 minutes, the practice remained open to the media before becoming a closed session. After the team’s time on the court was up, coach Borseth spoke with the ESPN2 commentators for tomorrow night’s game, Tom Hart and Krista Blunk.
TOURNAMENT TALK: The team returned from practice and ate dinner at 7:30 p.m. before a special edition of Tournament Talk with Kevin Borseth at 8:15 p.m. Hosted by Green Bay assistant athletics director Andrew Gavin, the show opened with a recap of the day’s events before player guest Lydia Bauer talked about past experiences in the NCAA Tournament. After a comical segment hosted by Adrian Ritchie and Sarah Eichler that had the crowd rolling, Gavin and Borseth previewed the keys to winning tomorrow night’s game.
BELLY PHLOP: To close the night, members of the team served as judges in the annual Phoenix Phlop Off competition between the Green Bay cheer team and pep band. Unlike previous years at less balmy locations, this year’s belly-flop competition was held outside on a 65-degree evening at 9:30 p.m.
BIG DAY TOMORROW: After a 9 a.m. breakfast on Sunday, Green Bay will have its shootaround session later in the morning before the start of the day’s first contest between No. 3 seed Penn State and No. 14 seed Cal Poly. The Phoenix will head to the arena tomorrow afternoon and battle the Lady Tigers at approximately 6:30 p.m.
