GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 assists per game in a pair of home wins over Marquette and South Dakota, Green Bay sophomore Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Monday, the league office announced. The award marks the second time this season and third time in his career Sykes has won the weekly honor.

The award also comes after Sykes was named last week to the Bob Cousy Watch List as one of the nation's top point guards. The 5-foot-11 Chicagoan leads the Phoenix and is second in the Horizon League in scoring at 16.8 points per game while adding 3.7 assists per contest. He is shooting 45.3 percent from the field, 47.1 percent from long range and 84.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Sykes was also named the High-Major National Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

On Wednesday, Sykes scored a game-high 20 points and surpassed 500 career points in a 49-47 upset victory over Marquette in the Golden Eagles' first visit to the Resch Center. In that contest, he scored or assisted on 32 of his team's 49 points (65.3%) as the Phoenix snapped a four-game slide in front of nearly 7,000 fans.

Sykes followed up that effort with an efficient 17-point, 8-assist performance on Saturday as Green Bay cruised to a 72-55 win over South Dakota. He was 6-of-8 from the field and knocked down each of his four free throw attempts. Sykes scored or assisted on 50 percent of the Phoenix points against the Coyotes.

The South Dakota game was the end of an impressive 29-game stretch for Sykes at the age of 18. The Preseason All-Horizon League Second-Team selection reached double figures in 26 games and averaged 15.6 points per game (451 points). Sykes was previously named Horizon League Player of the Week on Nov. 12, 2012 and Feb. 27, 2012.

The Phoenix concludes its four-game homestand on Sykes' 19th birthday, hosting Illinois-Springfield on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.
