This season Bollant coached the Phoenix to its best finish in program history

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - On the heels of guiding the No. 13/11 Green Bay (34-2) women's basketball team to its best season in program history, head coach Matt Bollant has been named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year for Region 6.

"It's such a great honor to be named in the same caliber as the other coaches receiving this award in their respective regions," said Bollant. "This is a team and staff award."

Bollant just completed his fourth season with the Phoenix, guiding it to the 38-year-old program's first Sweet 16 appearance in this year's NCAA Tournament. This season goes in the record books as the best in program history with the most wins (34), highest winning percentage (.944), points scored (2666), free throws made (539), assists (721), steals (442), turnover margin (+8.0) and scoring margin (+20.9).

In addition, for the second time in program and Horizon League history, Bollant led Green Bay to an 18-0 record in conference play while winning 91 percent (11-1) of its non-conference games, including going 3-0 against Big Ten opponents (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State) before knocking off UALR and Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament.

Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer was named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Division I National Coach of the Year. Other Coach of the Year recipients for their respective regions are:

Region 1 - Geno Auriemma (University of Connecticut)

Region 2 - Katie Meier (University of Miami)

Region 3 - Pat Summitt (University of Tennessee)

Region 4 - Todd Buchanan (University of Houston)

Region 5 - Kim Mulkey (Baylor University)

Region 6 - Matt Bollant (Green Bay)

Region 7 - Teresa Weatherspoon (Louisiana Tech University)

All Coach of the Year recipients will be formally recognized during the WBCA awards show, which will be held Monday, April 4.
