GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team fell short of the weekend sweep of Horizon League foe Youngstown State on Sunday, winning the first game of a doubleheader before falling in the second at Riverside Park in Allouez.

Green Bay earned a 5-2 win in game two before being shutout in the second game, 2-0. The Phoenix is now 14-7 overall and 3-2 in conference action, while the Penguins moved to 16-15 overall and 3-4 in the Horizon League.

Game 1 – Green Bay 5, Youngstown State 2
The Phoenix wasted no time putting its first runs on the board in the first. Junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led off with a sharp-hit single down the left field line, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an error by Youngstown’s shortstop that also allowed freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) to reach safely and advance to second. Sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) then drove in the first run on an infield groundout before senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) laid down a sacrifice bunt for the second run of the inning.

Green Bay padded its lead in the bottom of the second with three runs. Leading off with a ground-rule double to straightaway center, senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) then scored on a hard-hit liner through the right side from sophomore Ashley Baker (Green Bay, Wis.). After a fly out, sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) reached on an infield single to chase Penguins starting pitcher Kayla Haslett out of the circle.

Replaced by Caitlyn Minney, the new pitcher hit her first batter faced to load the bases before giving up an RBI single through the left side from Huemmer. Two consecutive plays at the plate brought the inning to an end for the Phoenix. Attempting to advance runners on a wild pitch, Hutchinson was caught out at home. Michalkiewicz then reached on an error by YSU’s second baseman that allowed one to score, but Huemmer was caught in a rundown trying to score to end the inning with the Phoenix leading 5-0.

Youngstown State got a two-run home run from Miranda Castiglione in the top of the third, but it was all the offense it could put on the board in the game as the Phoenix took game one, 5-2.

Reinke finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored. Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) picked up her fourth complete game of the season and improved to 3-2 after allowing two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2 – Youngstown State 2, Green Bay 0
Youngstown State got single runs in the second and seventh innings while starting pitcher Casey Crozier held the Phoenix to just three hits while striking out 10 as the Penguins picked up a 2-0 win in game two of the doubleheader.

Capitalizing on a Green Bay error, Youngstown State put up its first run of the game with two outs in the top of the second. With two runners in scoring position and two out, Maria Lacatena hit a ground ball to Phoenix shortstop Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.). Mohrfeld collected the grounder and threw to first, but her attempt drew first baseman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) off the bag, allowing Lacatena to reach safely and one run to score.

A leadoff home run by Sarah Dowd tacked on another run for the Penguins in the top of the seventh and Crozier set down the Phoenix in order in the home half of the inning to preserve the 2-0 YSU win.

Senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) accounted for two of Green Bay’s three hits in the game with a 2-for-3 showing. Mohrfeld had the other hit, finishing 1-for-3. Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts. Junior Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) threw the final inning after Nannemann allowed the leadoff home run in the top of the seventh, giving up two hits with a walk.

Crozier picked up the complete game shutout, scattering three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Green Bay returns to action on Wednesday, hosting UW-Parkside in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
