CLEARWATER, Fla. ( – Green Bay split a pair of games on Sunday as it wrapped up competition at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Florida.

The Phoenix wrapped up the weekend with a 3-1 extra-innings win over Connecticut before losing to Purdue, 5-0, to finish the tournament with a record of 5-1. It also improved the team to 8-2 overall this season.

GAME 1 Green Bay 3, Connecticut 1, eight innings
It took extra innings, but the Phoenix got two runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Connecticut, 3-1, in the first game of the day.

Green Bay took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. After a leadoff single by senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.), sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) and senior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) both walked to load the bases with no outs. A third-consecutive walk put junior Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) on base and brought in Reinke for the lone Phoenix run.

The lead lasted all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning, when UConn capitalized on two Green Bay errors to tie the game. A one out single put a Huskies runner on and a Green Bay error allowed another to reach, leaving runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly by Emily O’Donnell gave UConn the tying run, but senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) set down the next batter faced to retire the Huskies and send the game to extra innings.

It didn’t take long for Green Bay to respond, scoring the go-ahead runs in the next half inning. Junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) started the inning on second, eventually scoring on a one out RBI double to center by Michalkiewicz. The next batter added an insurance run, as Stacey Butts singled up the middle to bring home Michalkiewicz and give Green Bay the 3-1 lead.

Nannemann retired the Huskies side in order in the bottom of the eighth to earn the win in her complete game effort. She finished the game allowing one unearned run on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Stacey Butts was 2-for-3 on the with an RBI, while Michalkiewicz was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

GAME 2 Green Bay 0, Purdue 5
Green Bay saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end as it was shut out by Purdue, 5-0, in the final game of the weekend.

The Phoenix was held to just four hits in the game, while the Boilermakers got five runs on eight hits in the winning effort. Purdue got single runs in the bottom of the first and fifth innings before tacking on three more in the bottom of the sixth.

Green Bay recorded a single hit in both the first and second innings but couldn’t bring anyone home. The team was then held without a hit until the top of the seventh when it saw the best opportunity to score. Senior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) led off the inning with a single to center and two batters later freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) singled to shortstop, but a strikeout ended the inning while stranding two as the Boilermakers picked up the shutout.

Huemmer was the lone Phoenix with a multi-hit effort, finishing the game 2-for-3. Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) threw a complete game losing effort, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Next up for the Phoenix is a pair of games on Tuesday as they face Albany at 10 a.m. and Army at noon.
