Phoenix Has Strong Second Day at Western Michigan Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team had a strong second day of competition at the Western Michigan Jack Vredevelt Invitational on Saturday, picking up six singles and three doubles wins.
Sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) posted an unbeaten record on Saturday, winning twice in singles action and once in doubles. Scott started his day by teaming up with junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) for an 8-6 victory over Notre Dame's duo of Ryan Bandy and Kenneth Sabacinski in the Gold Doubles flight. In Gold Singles, Scott knocked off WMU's Ruben Grenier 7-6 (4), 6-3 before taking down Xavier's Jimmy Roebker 7-5, 7-5.
Tenzer dropped his Gold Singles match, but bounced back to crush Xavier's Zach Mueck 6-1, 6-1 in the Black Singles flight.
Sophomore Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) had a strong showing for the second straight day, following up Friday's singles win with two more individual victories as well as a doubles victory. Gomez Islinger won his Black Singles match against Xavier's Freddy Abunku 6-0, 6-1, his Gold Singles contest against Illinois State's Rodrigo Oliveira 6-3, 6-4 and also paired with classmate Rowan Isaaks for an 8-3 win at Black Doubles.
Another sophomore Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Wis.) won twice on Saturday, first teaming up with junior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) for an 8-6 win over Xavier's Abunku and Brian Carman in Black Doubles before earning a 6-3, 6-2 win over Horizon League rival Joe VanMeter of Cleveland State in Brown Singles.
Green Bay wraps up the final day of the WMU Invite on Sunday.
