A 1994 UW-Green Bay graduate, Dan McIver has 17 years of administrative experience with the Phoenix.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has announced that Dan McIver will serve as interim director of intercollegiate athletics, effective Aug. 1, 2013.

The appointment was announced today (Thursday, July 11) by UW-Green Bay Chancellor Tom Harden.

“Dan’s lengthy and effective service with Green Bay Athletics made him the logical choice,” Harden said. “I have full confidence in his ability to direct the program during this time of leadership transition.”

McIver has 17 years of administrative experience with the Phoenix program and currently serves as senior associate athletics director. He will be the program’s top administrator while the University conducts a nationwide search to replace Ken Bothof.

That search began Tuesday with posting of the job description at the UW-Green Bay human resources website, http://www.uwgb.edu/hr/jobs/position889.html

McIver joined Green Bay Athletics in 1996 as assistant athletics director for program operations, and was promoted to associate athletics director in 2004. His varied duties over the years have centered on program operations and finances. McIver currently oversees financial operations of the athletics department and the Kress Events Center along with six sports: men's soccer, men's and women's Nordic skiing, softball and men's and women's swimming and diving. His other duties include supervision of marketing and promotions, ticketing and sports medicine, as well as contract negotiations.

A native of Waupun, McIver received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from UW-Green Bay in 1994. He worked as an assistant in the University’s Business and Finance Office while a student, and as a staff accountant with a local telecommunications company following graduation. He completed his master’s degree in business administration at UW-Oshkosh in 2004.

“I’m excited by the opportunity Chancellor Harden has given me,” McIver said. “As an alum and long-time employee of UW-Green Bay, I am passionate about Phoenix Athletics and very familiar with the staff, current student-athletes and the operation of the department. I look forward to working with coaches and staff, campus administration and community supporters to build upon the department’s many successes.”

McIver has been a top administrative aide to Bothof since the latter’s hiring in 2002. Bothof announced his resignation last month in accepting the AD job at Northern Kentucky University. With 11 years as Phoenix AD, Bothof was the longest-tenured of the seven individuals to hold the position over the program’s 44-year history.

Long-time UW-Green Bay administrator Dan Spielmann, special assistant to the chancellor, has been appointed by Harden to head the search and screen committee. Spielmann is an attorney and former intercollegiate athletics director himself, with Division I experience at UW-Green Bay (1985-94) and D-II Northern Michigan University (2000-2003).

Spielmann says his committee will operate on a fairly direct timeline. The job posting advises applicants to ensure consideration by responding no later than Friday, Aug. 9. Spielmann says interviews, visits and screening will likely extend into September. The goal is to present a slate of finalists to Harden as early as possible this fall.

“We expect to attract very good candidates,” Spielmann said. “There are only 350 Division I jobs of this kind in the country. With the facilities we have, a solid conference, the national exposure with basketball and some of the other teams, the community support, a history of very successful student-athletes… I think this will be rightfully viewed as a great opportunity.”
