EAST LANSING, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team wrapped up its participation at the 2012 ITA Midwest Regional Championships over the weekend with singles and doubles action at the Michigan State University Indoor Tennis Facility.
Sophomore Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) advanced to the round of 16 in the Main Draw of singles, picking up a pair of wins over tough opponents. Tenzer earned a victory in his opening match on Friday, defeating Notre Dame's Ryan Bandy (6-4, 6-4) to advance to the round of 32. Tenzer then defeated Wisconsin's Billy Bertha 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday to move to the round of 16, where he battled hard with Illinois' Jared Hiltzik, but dropped a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 result. Hiltzik is still alive in the Main Draw and is one win away from the championship match on Monday.
After winning his first two matches on Thursday in the qualifying rounds, senior Craig Cox (Surrey, England) defeated IPFW's Daniel Kang (6-4, 6-2) on Friday to advance to the Main Draw with teammates Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) and Tenzer. Cox battled with Ohio State's Hunter Callahan in his first-round matchup, but fell in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
Finkenbrink had a tough draw in his first-round matchup, facing 16th-seeded Vlad Stefan of Michigan. The Phoenix senior dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Stefan is also one win away from qualifying for Monday's championship match.
Sophomore Gary Notkin (Plymouth, Minn.) and freshman Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) teamed up for a win in their doubles contest on Friday, defeating DePaul's Adam Reinhart and Kyle Johnson 9-8 (7-5). The Phoenix tandem then fell to Ohio State's Connor Smith and Callahan 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.
