GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Junior men's tennis player Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) is currently competing in his third year as a Green Bay student-athlete.
"Green Bay has been a great experience so far, " said Swanson. "The coaching staff is very helpful on and off the court and my teammates have become like family to me."
Swanson has played a key role on the team since day one of his career at Green Bay under head coach Mark Thomas.
"I feel very fortunate to have started my coaching career with Paul Swanson as an incoming freshman," Thomas said. "He was the first piece of the puzzle in our goal to build a Horizon League championship team. Paul is one of the best competitors I've known. If the match is tied 3-3, I like our chances if Paul is on the court."
During the 2009-2010 season, Swanson achieved singles records at the top three positions of 14-7 overall and 3-4 in the Horizon League and earned second team All-Horizon League honors. Swanson was also the sole winner for the Phoenix in the duel matches against Wisconsin and Marquette, defeating his nationally ranked opponents in three sets.
Swanson continues to find success during this spring season with singles records at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions of 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League. As the Horizon League Championships grow nearer, Swanson has high hopes for his team.
"I am excited for the conference tournament, since that's really what we build our season around," said Swanson. "Hopefully, we are able to reach our goal and win the conference and be able to continue on to the NCAA tournament."
In addition to Swanson's many achievements on the court, he has also excelled in the classroom. Swanson is pursing a major in business administration with an emphasis in finance and a minor in economics.
