MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team opened its spring season over the weekend by splitting a pair of matches away from home. The Phoenix defeated IUPUI 7-0 on Sunday in Milwaukee after falling to Dartmouth 6-1 on Saturday in Chicago.
Sophomore Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) had a strong weekend for Green Bay, picking up a pair of wins at No. 1 singles. Finkenbrink defeated Dartmouth's Michael Laser 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday for Green Bay's lone singles win, and then beat IUPUI's Nick Volz 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday.
"Erik Finkenbrink was tremendous on Saturday against Dartmouth," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. "We played a very good team and lost the momentum after having chances to secure the doubles point, which led to several poor first sets in the singles matches."
In Sunday's 7-0 sweep of IUPUI, Cox and Gogolin paired up to win the No. 1 doubles match, beating Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis 8-2. Cox also won his No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-2, while Gogolin won at No. 5 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up a victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Ivan Mojsejev 6-1, 6-2.
"The guys competed well and played great on Sunday," Thomas said. "Cox and Gogolin played great doubles all weekend and set the tone for the team to secure the doubles point. The guys continued the momentum into singles, andGreen Bay is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 when it travels to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois. picked up his level a notch which was great to see.
