ANN ARBOR, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) refused to give up on Sunday afternoon, and in the end that attitude propelled No. 1 Green Bay (18-7) to the title at the 2014 Horizon League Men’s Tennis Championship at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center. Scott rallied from down 5-1 in the third set to post a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles and secure a 4-3 victory for the Phoenix over No. 2 Cleveland State.

With the victory, head coach Mark Thomas and Green Bay earned the automatic berth into the 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship for the second time in the past three seasons. Last season, the Phoenix fell 4-3 to the Vikings, with Scott losing the decisive match.

Green Bay won the crucial doubles point with victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles, and then went in front 3-1 when junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and sophomore Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) claimed a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Cleveland State rallied to knot the match at 3-3 with hard-fought wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, leaving the match result up the action at No. 3 singles. Scott prevailed, breaking the serve of Jorge Van Der Vloet to move ahead 6-5 and then holding at love to for the victory which brought his teammates storming to congratulate the sophomore.
