GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – After leading his team to a second consecutive Horizon League regular season title over the weekend, Green Bay men’s tennis junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) was selected as the Horizon League Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season and fourth time in his standout career.

Tenzer posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in a pair of wins against Detroit and Wright State, helping the Phoenix to a perfect 6-0 record in league play (16-7 overall) for the second year in a row. In addition, the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year wrapped up his regular season with an unblemished 6-0 mark against conference opponents at No. 1 singles for the second straight year.

"Michael had a great final weekend of the regular season, leading the team to two wins and an undefeated record in conference play," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. "Individually, Michael's undefeated record at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles is extremely impressive."

In Friday’s 5-2 victory over Detroit in Kalamazoo, Mich., Tenzer teamed up with sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) for Green Bay’s lone doubles win – an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 against Rafael Orantes and Chance Conley – and then earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over the Titans’ Bobby Cawood at the top singles spot. The win helped the Phoenix clinch at least a share of the regular season crown.

Saturday saw Green Bay claim the title outright, with Tenzer collecting two more wins in a 5-2 result at Wright State. The Phoenix dropped the doubles point for the second straight match, but Tenzer and Scott prevailed 8-6 against Hayden Joblin and Ricardo Pineda at No. 1, and the Phoenix rallied once again to take five of the singles contests. Tenzer defeated the Raiders’ Dan Gilbert at the No. 1 spot by a familiar score of 6-2, 7-5.

Tenzer concluded the regular season with an outstanding 16-4 singles record, winning 10 of his last 12 matches. He also accumulated an impressive 15-6 record in doubles action and a 6-0 mark in league play, primarily teaming up with Scott at No. 1.

Top-seeded Green Bay will have a first-round bye in this weekend’s 2014 Horizon League Championship, which will take place at the University of Michigan Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Phoenix will play the winner of No. 4 Valparaiso and No. 5 UIC on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. CT. The entire championship will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.

Green Bay finished runner-up at last year’s championship after earning the program’s first Horizon League tournament title and first NCAA berth in 2012.
