GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – After an impressive week against strong competition, Green Bay’s No. 1 doubles duo of sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) and junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) have been ranked as the No. 40 doubles team in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

It marks the highest doubles ranking in school history, and is just the second time a Green Bay pair has been ranked nationally. Tenzer and Felix Goepper were No. 61 during the 2012 campaign.

“Howard and Michael have had a great start to the spring season, and I am very happy for them as they have achieved one of their doubles goals in earning a national ranking,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “They have only played minimally together since Tenzer was out with an injury for most of the fall. Their best doubles play is ahead of them as they earn more experience together.”

Scott and Tenzer posted a perfect 4-0 record at the No. 1 doubles spot last week, helping the Phoenix to three team victories.

In the lone loss of the week at No. 42 Drake, Scott and Tenzer helped Green Bay claim the doubles point with a remarkable 6-3 win over the Bulldogs’ pair of Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel, which was ranked as the No. 8 doubles team in the nation. Later in the day,  the Phoenix standouts battled to a 6-5 (5) win over Kansas City’s Tomas Patino and Mike Psarros to help deliver another doubles point en route to a 4-0 sweep.

On Sunday at Western Racquet and Fitness Club, Scott and Tenzer knocked off a pair of top-10 Division III doubles opponents in wins over No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis and No. 24 UW-Whitewater.

The Green Bay tandem first beat No. 3 Ross Putterman and Jeremy Bush 6-5 (4) in a 4-0 win over Washington U, and then defeated No. 7 Byron Balkin and Ben Shkylar 6-2 in a 5-0 sweep of the Warhawks.

Scott and Tenzer are 6-2 overall at the No. 1 doubles spot, helping Green Bay to a strong 6-3 start in its spring season. All three of Green Bay’s losses have been to ranked Division I opponents.

“Howard and Michael both return serve exceptionally well and have very strong serves of their own, which makes them a very strong doubles team,” Thomas said. “I look forward to their development together over the course of this year and next season.”

The Phoenix has another challenging weekend ahead, traveling to Kalamazoo, Mich., to take on Western Michigan on Friday (6 p.m.) and IPFW (9 a.m.) on Saturday before heading to Toledo to face the Rockets on Sunday (12 p.m.).
