GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – The Green Bay women’s tennis team (0-1) got its 2014 spring season underway on Saturday morning, falling 7-0 to visiting South Dakota State (1-0) at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.

The Jackrabbits took all three doubles contests before sweeping the six singles matches in the opening match of the season for both teams.

“I’m proud of the way our team fought and how we came out strong right away in doubles,” first-year head coach Sommer May said. “Unfortunately we didn’t have what it took to pull out any wins today against SDSU. Today’s match was a good eye-opener for what everyone individually needs to work on. Overall, we need to reduce the amount of unforced errors, find ways to be more consistent and finish points at the net.”

Sophomore Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) and freshman Claudia Negron (Lima, Peru) played tough for the Phoenix at the top, as the two first teamed up for a hard-fought, 6-3 defeat against SDSU’s Jenny Blackburne and Ffion Davies at No. 1 doubles.

Londre then battled against the Jackrabbits’ Florencua Magni at No. 1 singles, but Magni prevailed 6-2, 6-3. Negron and Davies squared off in the No. 2 singles contest, with Davies taking home a 6-1, 6-3 result.

SDSU won the No. 3-No. 6 singles matches 6-0, 6-0.

The Phoenix women return to action at Western Racquet next Friday, hosting Cardinal Stritch at 7 p.m.
