CLEVELAND, Ohio. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Three first half goals helped propel the Cleveland State men’s soccer team to its first Horizon League win of the season, topping Green Bay, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Krenzler Field.

The win improved the Vikings to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay dropped to 6-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.

The Phoenix put the first two shots of the match on the scoreboard midway through the opening half, including a shot on goal by Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) in the 21st minute that was collected by CSU keeper Nick Ciraldo.

However, Cleveland State responded and netted its first goal of the match in the 25th minute. James Howe collected a pass from Admir Suljevic at the top of the box and snuck it past Green Bay’s Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.) to put the hosts ahead, 1-0.

Six minutes later Sergio Manesio scored his first of two goals in the match. Sulijevic again set up the shot, passing to Manesio who sent it home from the top of the box. A header goal by Manesio in the 43rd minute added to the Vikings lead, as the squad went into the break with a 3-0 lead and 5-3 advantage in shots. Green Bay led in corner kicks during the opening stanza, 5-1.

It was a quiet scoring second half, with neither team adding to the scoreboard. Green Bay managed two shots and three corners in the half, compared to eight shots and four corners by Cleveland State.

For the match, Green Bay owned an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks, while the Vikings led shots, 13-5. Ihn played the first half in net and allowed three goals with one save before Dary DeWalt (Milwaukee, Wis.) entered for the second half, making one save. Sabastian Xiong (Cottage Grove, Wis.) led the Phoenix with two shots.

Green Bay returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Drake at 2:30 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
