Women's Soccer Edged by Youngstown State, 2-1

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio ( – Youngstown State registered a goal in each half as it edged the Green Bay women’s soccer team, 2-1, in Horizon League action on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Farmers National Bank Stadium in Youngstown.

The loss evened Green Bay’s Horizon League record at 1-1 and dropped the squad to 4-4-4 overall. The win moved the Penguins to 1-1 in the conference and 3-8-1 overall.

Youngstown got on the board first in the 12th minute. Cara Armstrong netted her second goal of the season with a shot from 40 yards out that landed in the middle of the penalty box and took a huge bounce over the outstretched arms of  Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) to put the home team up, 1-0.

The Phoenix responded with a string of three shots by Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.), Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) and Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) in the 17th minute. Kernen finally broke through with just over 13 minutes remaining in the opening stanza, sending the ball to the upper right corner from 20 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.

The Penguins grabbed back the lead in the 52nd minute. Chelsey Haney had a breakaway opportunity and finished to the top right corner of the goal to push Youngstown ahead, 2-1. Green Bay saw several opportunities in the closing minutes, including three consecutive corner kicks in the 87th minute but the squad was unable to capitalize.

For the match, Green Bay led in corner kicks, 5-2, with all of those opportunities coming in the second half. Youngstown led in shots, 17-9. Kernen led the Phoenix with three shots, while Behle played the entire match in goal and made seven saves.

Green Bay returns to conference action next Saturday, making the trip to Detroit for a Horizon League matchup at noon.
