JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's golf teams opened their seasons Monday and Tuesday, competing in the Benbow Invitational at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Course in Jacksonville, Fla. The Phoenix men tied for third while the Green Bay women finished in 14th place.
The balanced Green Bay men had an impressive 36-hole tournament, with four different golfers carding team-best rounds. In Monday's opening round, sophomore Sam Weber (Heartland, Wis.) fired an even-par round of 71 to lead the Phoenix to a team score of 297.
On Tuesday, juniors Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) and sophomore Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) each shot rounds of 73 to lead the Phoenix to a team score of 292. Fuller and Ebert each concluded the two-day tournament in a tie for seventh (146=74-72).
Green Bay tied with Evansville for third place with a cumulative team score of 589 (+21), behind only IUPUI (757, +7) and Sam Houston State (558, +8). The 13-team field also included Horizon League schools Butler and Cleveland State, which finished in fifth and seventh respectively.
Senior Eleanor Yorobe (Bloomington, Minn.) used rounds of 87 and 86 to lead the Green Bay women's team in its season opener. Junior Christina De Boer (Onalaska, Wis.) matched her 86 in round two for a two-day total of 180. Senior Stephanie Fifield (Oconto Falls, Minn.) was a stroke back of De Boer with a two-day total of 181 (92-89).
Both teams will stay in Jacksonville to play in the Butler Invitational at Windsor Park Golf Course on March 14-15.
