Freshman Tyler Schmidt is off to a strong start to his collegiate career.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Fighting windy conditions that yielded only one round under par in two days, freshman Tyler Schmidt (Jefferson, Wis.) fired his second-straight two-over par 74 Tuesday at Green Bay Country Club to take third-place at the Green Bay Invitational. Schmidt, playing for the Green Bay B team, finished four strokes back of North Dakota State's Nate Varty, who claimed medalist honors with two even par rounds.

Junior Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) had a 78 on Tuesday and tied for sixth overall to lead the top Green Bay squad to a fifth-place finish. The Phoenix had a 318 in tough conditions after firing a 301 on Monday. Butler took the team title with a total score of 606, two shots clear of defending champion Saint Ambrose (300-308=608). North Dakota State (304-309=613) and North Dakota State's B squad (298-318=616) took third and fourth, respectively.

Sophomore Sam Weber (Heartland, Wis.) and Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) were tied for 15th overall with 36-hole totals of 155. Weber shot a 78 on Tuesday while Boockmeier carded an 81. Boockmeier had a team-high eight birdies on the week for the Phoenix.

Freshman Nic Johnson (Wales, Wis.) also tied for 15th place while playing for the Green Bay B team. Led by Johnson's second-round 76, the squad finished in sixth place (313-310=613) in the team standings. Fellow freshman Derek Fiestadt (Kaukauna, Wis.) had a 78 on Tuesday for the B team.

Schmidt's second 74 was the third best round of the day on Tuesday and included four birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys. The freshman was just a stroke back of Saint Ambrose's Travis England, who finished second.  Schmidt led the tournament field in par five scoring at three-under par.

Green Bay returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, playing in the Erv Kaiser Invitational in Oxbow, N.D.
