Softball Takes One of Two in Doubleheader at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team took to the diamond in non-conference action on Monday, picking up a win in one of two games over IUPUI.

In two closely-contested games, Green Bay took game one, 7-5, before falling in game two, 3-4. The split moved the Phoenix to 12-6 overall this season.

Green Bay returns to the field this weekend, hosting Youngstown State in Horizon League action.

Game 1 – Green Bay 7, IUPUI 5
Green Bay broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh with a big two-run home run from senior Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) as it took game one of Monday’s doubleheader, 7-5.

The Phoenix fell behind in the early going after IUPUI put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Putting two runners in scoring position, freshman Abby Brinkmeier (Eagan, Minn.) hit an RBI single to left, classmate Allie Taylor (Waunakee, Wis.) delivered an RBI sacrifice fly and sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) had an RBI single in consecutive at-bats to drive in the three runs.

The lead was short lived as IUPUI grabbed back the lead, 4-3, in the home half of the third. Each team added a run in the fourth inning before the Phoenix evened the score at 5-5 with a lone run in the top of the fifth.

Heading into the seventh inning, Green Bay got the runs it needed to pick up the win with the big two-run home run by Shannon Butts.Junior  Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) set down the Jaguars in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 7-5 win for the Phoenix.

Working the final 2.0 innings Danner (3-1) picked up the win, holding IUPUI without a hit while striking out one. Freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) started the game in a no-decision effort, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts.

Shannon and Stacey Butts each finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run.

Game 2 – Green Bay 3, IUPUI 4
Green Bay came out on the opposite end of a similar situation to its first game of the day, as IUPUI got a go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and held off the Phoenix for a 4-3 win.

Sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) got the scoring started with a solo shot in the top of the first, and the Phoenix got another run on another solo homer from junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) in the top of the third to go up, 2-0.

However, IUPUI got two runs in the bottom of the third and took the lead with one run in the fourth to go up, 3-2.

Green Bay got the lead back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Michalkiewicz, but the Jaguars put the go-ahead run on the board in the home half of the inning and held on the rest of the way as it won, 4-3.

Michalkiewicz finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Mohrfeld was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) threw the final 1.2 innings, holding the Jaguars hitless.
