Green Bay Men's Tennis Splits Friday's Matches in Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s tennis team (4-3) split a pair of matches at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, sweeping UMKC (1-2) 4-0 in a neutral-site contest after dropping a tough 5-1 decision at No. 42 Drake (3-3).
The Phoenix got off to a great start against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs in the morning match, winning two of the three doubles contests to secure the first point of the day. Sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) and junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) teamed up to score an impressive upset at the No. 1 spot, defeating the nation’s No. 8 doubles duo of Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel 6-3.
Prior to Scott and Tenzer’s win, the Phoenix tandem of Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weieden, Germany) and Rowan Isaaks (London, England) picked up a 6-2 triumph over Drake’s Matt Frost and Ben Mullis at No. 3.
Green Bay hung tough in singles action, but Drake was able to finish off five victories to clinch the match. Gomez Islinger and sophomore Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) both earned set wins for the Phoenix, but Leto ultimately fell 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to No. 123 Frost at No. 4, and Gomez Islinger’s No. 3 contest against Goodman went unfinished (Goodman led 6-3, 2-6, 2-0).
The Phoenix controlled the afternoon match with a convincing 4-0 win over the Kangaroos, snapping a three-match skid – all against ranked opponents – and moving back above .500 on the year.
Green Bay once again took the doubles point to start, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 matches in tiebreakers. Tenzer and Scott combined for a 6-5 (5) over UMKC’s Tomas Patino and Mike Psarros at No. 1, and Isaaks and Gomez Islinger outlasted the Uldis Gaismins and Daniel De Zamacona by the same score in the No. 3 slot.
The Phoenix secured the victory by taking a trio of singles matches in straight sets. Isaaks rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Daniil Ivanov at No. 4, Gomez Islinger beat Andrey Smirnov 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Scott defeated Psarros 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
Green Bay returns home for two more matches this weekend, welcoming a pair of strong Division III programs to Western Racquet and Fitness Club on Sunday. The Phoenix first plays No. 4 Washington University in St. Louis at 12:30 p.m. before hosting No. 24 UW-Whitewater at 3:30 p.m.
