Green Bay Claims Butler Invitational Championship
FISHER, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s swimming and diving squad earned the Butler Invitational championship for the second-straight season on Sunday, placing first out of four schools. The Phoenix finished with 766.5 points in the one-day meet, nearly 100 points ahead of second-place Xavier (673).
Green Bay finished either first or second in 10 of the meet’s 16 events, picking up five total wins.
Reigning Horizon League Swimmer of the Week Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) had another outstanding day in the pool for the Phoenix on Sunday, collecting a trio of individual victories. The sophomore earned first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.79), the 200 breaststroke (2:08.50) and the 400 IM (4:02.90).
Green Bay started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Evan Hill (Jefferson, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.), Cole Hackney (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Casey Murphy (Sun Prairie, Wis.) raced to a victory in 1:34.89.
Korslin also nabbed an individual win in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall first in 58.13. Hackney went on to earn a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in both the 50 free (21.65) and the 100 butterfly (52.43).
Freshman James Wise (Chilton, Wis.) had a solid day on the boards for Green Bay, placing second in both the 1-meter (278.35) and 3-meter (240.65) events. Senior Robert Miner (Madison, Wis.) was also a runner-up in the pool on Sunday, placing second in the 200 butterfly in 1:56.12.
Both Phoenix squads return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 at in-state, Horizon League rival Milwaukee.
