Green Bay Men's Golf Pacing the Field After Round One
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay's quest for its first Horizon League men's golf title is off to a good start as the Phoenix sit atop a crowded leaderboard after the opening round of the 2012 Horizon League Championships. At Mission Inn Golf Resort in Florida on Friday, Green Bay carded a 13-over par 301 to lead the 54-hole, three-day event after round one.
Green Bay's score of 301 bettered any team score from the 2011 championship, also played at the par-72 Mission Inn Resort. After Green Bay, Detroit is second at 303 while Cleveland State and Valparaiso are another stroke back in a tie for third. Loyola is fifth after a score of 314 while Butler (315), Youngstown State (315) and Wright State (319) round out the field.
Juniors Chad Ebert (Kenosha, Wis.) and Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) are both in a tie for third individually after carding rounds of 74 on Friday. Ebert, who on Thursday was named to the Horizon League all-conference team, opened each of his nines with a birdie en route to shooting 1-over par on each side. Fuller had bookend birdies on the back nine after making the turn at 3-over. The duo is two strokes back of Detroit's Michael Nedoszytko, the only player in the 40 player field to shoot even par.
Sophomore Sam Weber (Heartland, Wis.) recorded a par on his final five holes to finish in a tie for 13th place at 4-over 76. Weber's lone birdie came at the par-3 eighth hole.
Sophomore Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) led early in his round on Friday and made the turn at even par after a pair of birdies on the front nine. The sophomore sits in a tie for 16th at 5-over 77 due to an unfortunate triple bogey on 15. Freshman Tyler Schmidt (Jefferson, Wis.) rounded out the Green Bay scores with an 80.
Round two will get underway Saturday morning. Fans can follow the action with live scoring on GolfStat.com.
