GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– Coming off its first Horizon League regular season title in 2013, the Green Bay men’s tennis team was picked to repeat as champion in 2014, receiving five of the seven first-place votes in the conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

“It is an honor to be chosen as preseason No. 1 by your peers,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “This year is the strongest the Horizon League has been from top to bottom in my six years in the conference. We are looking forward to each match being extremely competitive.”

Thomas’ squad posted a 17-7 overall record in 2013 and went a perfect 6-0 in Horizon League play to capture the school’s first conference crown. Green Bay dropped a dramatic Horizon League Championship match to Cleveland 4-3, denying the Phoenix a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Green Bay welcomes back the 2013 Horizon League Player of the Year in junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany). Tenzer went 16-4 in singles matches as a sophomore – 14-4 at No. 1 – and went unbeaten (6-0) during the Horizon League regular season.

Sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) led the Phoenix in a strong fall season, earning MVP honors at the Western Michigan Invite and Horizon League Player of the Week honors following a standout performance at the 20-team Purdue Fall Invite. Green Bay also played well at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Ohio State, knocking off a pair of Big Ten doubles teams.
