GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After recording eight points (3G, 2A) and having a hand in five of the six Phoenix goals scored this weekend, Green Bay senior forward Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Krenzien helped the Phoenix go 1-0-1 on the weekend, rallying from an early deficit to draw even with Eastern Illinois, 4-4, on Friday before again coming from behind to top NJIT, 2-1, on Sunday at the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Evansville. For his efforts, Krenzien was also named to the all-tournament team.
In the first match of the tournament against Eastern Illinois, Krenzien finished with two goals and two assists. Starting the scoring for Green Bay, Krenzien scored two goals 1:15 seconds apart in the first half to put the Phoenix ahead, 2-1. He then had the assist on a goal by Defrim Ramushevski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) in the 26th minute to push the advantage to 3-1. EIU responded with three-consecutive goals to grab back the lead, but it was again Krenzien and Ramushevski who connected in the 85th minute to tie the game and send it to extra minutes.
Against NJIT on Sunday, Krenzien netted the game winner in the 65th minute, dribbling around two defenders at the top of the box before finding the inside near post.
Krenzien is currently the Horizon League’s top scorer with 16 points, and also leads with seven goals and four assists. His seven goals already are a single-season best for Krenzien, besting his previous total of six during the 2011 season.
Green Bay will enjoy some time off before returning to the pitch on October 1, traveling to North Carolina to take on UNC-Asheville.
