GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – As the 2012-13 school year winds down and students at UW-Green Bay prepare for final exams, Phoenix student-athletes continue to remain extremely active in the Green Bay community. Most recently, the Phoenix men’s basketball and women’s soccer teams lent a helping hand at the YMCA Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, May 4 at Shopko Hall, spending the day playing sports and hanging out with area youngsters.

The hundreds of kids in attendance at the free event had the chance to shoot hoops and play pick-up games with the entire Phoenix men’s basketball squad, as well as kick the soccer ball around and try to score goals against the women’s soccer players. Men’s basketball’s 7-foot-1 junior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) also tried his luck at soccer, proving to be a tough goalkeeper for kids to get past.

The YMCA Healthy Kids Day is just one of many events that Phoenix student-athletes volunteer at throughout the year, as the department logs more than 4,000 hours of community service annually.

Also this past Saturday, members of the women’s soccer team helped out at the Special Olympics Soccer Tournament at Ashwaubenon High School. The Green Bay student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) also teamed up with the Special Olympics in March to host the second annual Green Bay Phoenix Invite – a basketball tournament for the Special Olympics of Northeast Wisconsin.

The Green Bay SAAC also hosted Kids Night Out in April at the Kress Events Center, giving kids the opportunity to come to campus and hang out with Phoenix student-athletes while providing parents the chance for an evening out.

In addition to hosting and attending community service events, several Phoenix teams put on clinics for area youths throughout the year and help raise awareness and funds for good causes such as fighting breast cancer. This year’s annual PinkZone women’s basketball game raised nearly $13,000 for the Patient Assistance Fund at the Cancer Team at Bellin Health, and the five-year total is nearly $90,000.
