KISSIMMEE, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team (4-11) watched its offense come alive in a 16-1 win over Rider University on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader with the Broncs. The Phoenix closed out the day by overcoming a 5-3 deficit in the sixth inning to come back for a 6-5 victory.

Green Bay 16, Rider 1 (Five Innings)

Green Bay allowed just one run in the third inning and used a 10-run second inning to beat the Broncs in dominating fashion. Sophomore Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and senior Cassie Scheel (Hartland, Wis.) each homered in the effort as Mohrfeld finished 2-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Senior Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) went 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

No player on the Phoenix roster struck out in the win and only two runners were left on base. Freshman Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) pitched all five innings, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out two.

“We had a really big second inning and that definitely helped us get this win—the bats were swinging the right way today and it’s always nice to have a day when you score like this,” head coach Jean Rivett said. “Briana Cavin pitched a fabulous game today and put us in a good spot to win.”

Green Bay 6, Rider 5

Game two of the doubleheader was a little closer than the first, but the Phoenix used two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to complete a comeback win. Trailing 5-3 in the top of the sixth, Green Bay cut the deficit to one when sophomore Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.) scored after fellow sophomore Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) reached on an error. Senior Jess Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) stepped up to the plate after the score and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring junior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) to tie the game at 5-5.

Senior Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) took the mound in the bottom of the sixth, holding the Broncs scoreless. Spangberg delivered the game-winner with a double to left field, scoring Mohrfeld for the 6-5 lead. Goecks remained solid in the bottom of the seventh, striking out two en route to giving the Phoenix the 6-5 win.

“Allison came into the game and just shut them down,” Rivett said. “Both her and Miranda (Spangberg) were really solid late in that game and helped us come back for the win. It really builds our confidence when we know we can come back and win like this.”

Spangberg and Hrncar each went 2-3 in the win, while the latter and Michalkiewicz each had two RBIs. Goecks struck out three of the seven batters she faced over her two innings of work.

NEXT ON SCHEDULE: Green Bay closes out the 2013 Rebel Spring Games on Thursday with a doubleheader against Manhattan. Following those contests, the team will return from warm and sunny Florida to battle UIC in Chicago on March 23 and 24.
