GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay's Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.), who recently completed his eligibility with the men's soccer program, was selected by the Chicago Fire in the third round of the MLS supplemental draft. The 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year was selected in the third round as the 47th overall pick in the supplemental draft and one of two players from the Horizon League selected.
"I'm excited for him and our program. Tony is the type of player that has the ability to make that jump to the MLS level," said Green Bay head coach Kris Kelderman who has a combined eight years of experience at the MLS level both as a coach and player. "He's a tough player both mentally and physically and I'm excited at his opportunity to prove his talents against the other players in the club."
"I'm really excited as it's a step closer to my dream of playing at the professional level," said Walls who was at his home in Wauwatosa tracking the draft online. "I saw my name pop up on the screen and then right after, I got the call and was super excited."
Friday Walls heads to Ave Maria, Fla. for a two week training camp with the Fire, where he will be battling for a spot on the roster.
"If I make the roster it is going to be great playing so close to home, so that's exciting in itself," said the two time All-Region Team selection. "I really feel like I have something to prove and I'm going to do my best."
Walls, along with 51 other college seniors from 31 Division I schools across the nation recently participated in the 2012 Adidas MLS Player Combine held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Jan. 6-10. The combine featured coaches and technical staffs from all 19 MLS clubs who scouted players such as Walls in preparation for the draft.
This is the second consecutive season Green Bay has had a player selected in the Supplemental Draft as Walls' former teammate and 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year, JC Banks, was drafted by Toronto FC in 2011.
