Green Bay, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Sophomore Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) scored all three goals in Green Bay's (9-5-1, 4-2-0) 3-1 win over Detroit (5-9-1, 1-4-1) Wednesday in a Horizon League men's soccer battle at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The win was the fifth consecutive for the Phoenix and the first multiple goal-scoring game for Krenzien in his young career.

"This is a huge win for us," said head coach Kris Kelderman. "Before the game we reminded our players that we can't look ahead and it's one game at a time for us. They came out with a great attitude and great energy for the game and it showed."

With 27 minutes left in the first half Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) served the ball from the left side of the box where he found Krenzien on the doorstep for the header goal and the 1-0 lead.

Exactly four minutes later, Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.) served the ball ahead to Krenzien who split the defenders and chipped the ball in the center of the net to boost the Phoenix lead to 2-0.

Green Bay outshot the Titans 15-3 and 5-0 on corner kicks throughout the first half of play with Krenzien leading the shot count with four.

"I've been pressing a lot lately and working on hitting the ball on target more during practice," said Krenzien.

Krenzien completed the hat trick less than eight minutes into the second half when Luke Goodnetter (Elm Grove, Wis.) found the sophomore forward on the left side of the box for the 3-0 Phoenix lead, putting the game away.

"As a team we're just happy for him," said Kelderman. "We know that he can be a good finisher and it's just a matter of having a night like tonight. He had a couple other chances and realistically could have had five or six goals."

With his three goals against Detroit, Krenzien now leads the Phoenix in the statistic along with Walls who also has netted five goals on the season.

"It just felt good to get one goal but to get three in one game on our home field was really neat," Krenzien said.

The Phoenix finished the game outshooting Detroit 20-7, allowing just four shots in the second half. Green Bay had seven corner kick opportunities throughout the game compared to the Titans' three. Krenzien led all players with five shots; four on goal, while Talery, Walls and Goodnetter all tallied assists in the win.

Green Bay has two games remaining in regular season play before the six-team Horizon League Championship kicks off Nov. 8. The Phoenix will head to Wright State Oct. 29 before wrapping up Nov. 5 as it hosts Valparaiso on senior day at 1 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
