Men's Soccer Adds Nine Players to 2011 Roster
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay men's soccer head coach Tom Poitras announced nine new commitments to the Green Bay men's soccer team for the 2011 season. Matt Cheaney (Oak Creek, Wis.), William Donovan (Saint Charles, MO), Trent Allison (Green Bay, Wis.), Austin Zimmerman (Big Bend, Wis.), Nate Simmons (Allen, Texas), Evan Krause (New Berlin, Wis.), Aniekan Akpan (Maple Grove, Minn.), Kirby Allen (Appleton, Wis.) and Defrim Ramushevski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) all have committed to play for the Phoenix.
"I believe this class addresses some specific needs and adds great depth to our team," said Poitras. "This group of young men come from winning prep programs and club teams and will help Green Bay continue its winning ways well into the future."
Cheaney, a defender at Thomas More, was an all-conference selection his junior and senior years in high school in addition to being named team MVP. A member of the Croatian Eagles club team, his squad earned the regional champion title three seasons and the won the 2010 State Cup Championship under head coach Aaron Schroeder. Academically, Cheaney is a four-year member of his school's honor roll.
Donovan played for Chaminade College Preparatory School as a midfielder. He was selected as a 2010 ESPN Rise Top Performer and was named to the 2010 Metro Catholic Conference first team. Donovan was also named to the 2010 Greater Midwest Classic All-Tournament team. His team was a 2010 district finalist, 2009 Metro Catholic Conference Champions. A member of the Scott Gallagher Soccer Club which is part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, Donovan was a member of the Missouri State Championship teams in 2007 and 2008 under head coach Blake Decker. Donovan led his team both in goals and total points for the 2010 season. He excels academically, earning academic honor roll honors from 2007-2010.
Allison played as a forward and midfielder for Fox Valley Lutheran High School. As a four year starter, Allison was named to the Eastern Valley All-Conference Team all four years. He was selected as the conference Offensive Player of the Year and served as team captain in 2009 and 2010. The Appleton Post-Crescent named Allison its 2009 Soccer Player of the Year. His team was the 2009 Division II State Champions and the 2010 Division II State Runner-Up. The Foxes were also voted the top performing Lutheran High School soccer team in the nation for 2009 and 2010. Allison was named to the academic honor roll in addition to being nominated for a Leadership Symposium. The two-time Lutheran High School All-American is also a three-year volunteer at high school sponsored soccer camps for grade school students. Allison played for the FC Green Bay club team under the leadership of head coach Quinn Ross.
A defender at Mukwonago High School and two-year varsity player, Zimmerman was an All-Conference Second Team selection in 2009 and First Team selection in 2010. Zimmerman served as a captain and was an All-State Honorable Mention in 2010. His Elm Grove SC Club team was the 2009 State Cup Semi-Finalist in addition to playing in the Adidas College Showcase, the Disney Soccer Showcase, the John Talley Showcase, Raleigh College Showcase and the Blue Chip College Showcase. Academically, Zimmerman is a four-year High Honors student and a four-year scholar athlete.
Simons joins the Phoenix as a transfer from Long Island University. Simons played as a center back and midfielder for Allen High School in Texas. A captain of the 2008 South Texas ODP Team and member of the Long Island University Men's Soccer program from 2009-2010, his team was a Dallas Cup Supergroup participant and high school state semi-finalist in 2007. Simons was also a member of the Andromeda 91 club National Championship team.
Ramushevski graduated South Milwaukee High School early in order to join the Phoenix this semester. During his prep career, Ramushevski was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection his sophomore year in addition to being named to the All-Conference First Team his junior and senior while being selected to the senior All Star game. A four-year starter and team captain his senior year, Ramushevski scored 12 goals during his career as a defender. He also helped lead his team to a conference championship in 2009 aiding his squad to 33 shutouts throughout his career.
Krause was a midfielder and forward for New Berlin Eisenhower High School and member of the 2009 State Cup team in 2009 and 2010 in which he played a key role in the team's success. Krause is a smooth, two-way midfielder who can distribute and defend. Krause was a club teammate of Cheaney for the 2010 State Cup Championship squad.
Akpan played outside midfield at Maple Grove Senior High School in Minnesota. He earned a varsity letter his sophomore year and was a 2010 All-Conference selection. His team finished as the sectional runner-up during both the 2008 and 2009 season. Akpan was also a member of the 2010 Conference runners-up squad. Akpan played for the Minnesota Thunder club team under the direction of coach Jim Niemann.
Allen, a forward from Appleton North High School under head coach Nate Werner, was an All-Conference First Team selection in 2009 and 2010. He was also selected to the All-Area First Team in 2009 and 2010 as well as the All-State First Team in 2010. The Appleton Post-Crescent Player of the Year in 2010, Kirby was a member of the Lightning's state finalist team in 2010. Allen was a member of the NEW United club team."We look forward to these guys blending in with our returning players while we all work together to continue to reach our team's high expectations," Poitras said. "Having had several of these players at our camps over the past few years, we feel we have had the opportunity to get to know them on a more personal level and seen them play several times which is a huge positive."
