Men's Soccer Kicks off Final Pair of Home Games with Loyola
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After earning its second-consecutive shutout at Western Illinois Tuesday, the Green Bay (10-4-1, 4-2-0 HL) men's soccer team returns home with its sixth consecutive win to take on Loyola (3-9-2, 3-2-1 HL) at Aldo Santaga Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Phoenix is coming off a 2-0 win at Western Illinois (3-7-6) despite playing against gusty winds the entire first half of the match. JC Banks (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored an unassisted goal in the 57th minute to put the Phoenix on the board. In the 74th minute, teammate David Bernhardsson (Tjorn, Sweden) handed the ball off to Banks who scored again for Green Bay.
Green Bay is 11-6-3 all time against Loyola. The Phoenix shut out the Ramblers 3-0 at home last season and has won two of the last three meetings.
The Phoenix is currently tied with Detroit (7-6-2, 4-2-0 HL) in second place in the Horizon League standings and is one of three teams with four wins in league play heading into this weekend. Including Loyola, Green Bay has two Horizon League opponents left to play this season. If the Phoenix finishes second in the league it will receive a first-round bye in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship which kicks off Tuesday, Nov. 9. With a #2 seed, Green Bay will play the highest remaining seed from the first round on Friday, Nov. 12.
Banks in the Ranks: Leading Green Bay and the Horizon League with 12 goals, Banks remains in the nation's top 20 in four of six offensive statistical categories, as of Oct. 25. Banks is 6th in total points, 9th in points per game with and 11th in both total goals and goals per game.
