Phoenix Falls to Flames 6-1 in Final Home Match
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Playing in its 2014 home finale, the Green Bay women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to perennial Horizon League power UIC on Sunday afternoon at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Flames scored wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the match’s opening point, and then earned straight-set victories at the No. 1 through No. 5 singles spots to improve to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Phoenix dropped to 1-11 (0-5 HL) with the loss.
Sophomore Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.), who had won five of her previous six singles contests entering Sunday’s match, put forth a strong effort at the No. 1 spot, but ultimately fell to UIC’s Natalia Kuvakina 6-3, 6-4. Green Bay’s lone point of the match came from the No. 6 singles spot, which the Phoenix won by default.
Green Bay will play its final five regular season contests away from home, beginning with treks to Cleveland State next Saturday and Youngstown State on Sunday.
