BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team opened up its 2014 season at the Hilltopper Classic on Friday, defeating host Western Kentucky, 6-5, in game one before falling to IUPUI, 3-0, in its second contest.

Playing in its first weekend of competition, the Phoenix evened its record at 1-1. They will continue in action tomorrow at the Hilltopper Classic, taking on Indiana State at 10:30 a.m. and Northern Iowa at 3:30 p.m.

Green Bay posted a come from behind victory in its first game of the tourney, upending host Western Kentucky with four runs in the top of the seventh to win, 6-5.

Trailing 2-0 after five, Green Bay got its first runs of the season as sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) delivered a bases loaded double to left center, scoring junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and junior Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) to even the score at 2-2.

Western Kentucy grabbed back the lead with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth, but the Phoenix again capitalized on another bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Michalkiewicz tripled to center field, clearing the bases to tie the game at 5-5. After senior Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) flied out, freshman Allie Taylor (Waunakee, Wis.) singled to right field to bring home Michakiewicz and push the visitors ahead, 6-5. The Phoenix put one more runner on base, but stranded two as senior Stacy Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) struck out to end the top half.

Green bay starter freshman Heather Sanderson (Rapid River, Mich.) pitched her first complete game of the season, setting down the Hilltoppers in order in the top of the seventh to pick up the win. Sanderson finished the game allowing five earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks. MIchalkiewicz finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and five RBI, while Taylor was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

In game two, IUPUI put up a single run in the second, third and fourth innings as it held the Phoenix scoreless in the 3-0 win. Two of the Jaguars runs were unearned, as Moiser crossed home plate after advancing to third on an error in the second, and Bartucci scored on a throwing error in the fourth.

Green Bay stranded a runner four of seven innings, with its best chance to score coming in the third. Mohrfeld led off with a single before being called out on a fielder’s choice as sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) reached safely. After  a strikeout, Michalkiewicz singled to short to put runners on first and second, but Taylor grounded out to end the inning.

Mohrfeld finished 2-for-2 at the plate, while freshman Katelyn Huemmer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was 2-for-3. Junior Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) threw 5.0 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Senior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) threw the final inning, striking out one.
