GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– After a dominating first half by the Green Bay women’s soccer team, Michigan Tech came out strong in the second half and netted a game-winning goal in the 77th minute to top the Phoenix, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium.

It was the first home loss of the season for Green Bay, dropping its overall record to 3-3-3, while the Huskies improved to 4-2-0.

"It was a good first half, but at halftime I told the team we can't keep creating chances and wasting them," said head coach Trevor Warren. "Our players had a strong effort, especially in the first half where we created 12 shots to none and ended the game with 18 shots to five and five corners to their one.

"Congratuations to Michigan Tech, they fought hard and believed in themselves to get the win."

Outshooting Michigan Tech 12-0 in the first half, including 6-0 on goal, Green Bay was unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) saw a shot graze the hands of Tech keeper Marybeth Spoehr in the 23rd minute to send the shot just wide. A minute later the Phoenix held advantage and Kernen worked around two defenders to put a shot on goal, but it landed right in the hands of Spoehr. In the 37th minute Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) camped in front of the keeper and headed a cross that again fell in the hands of Spoehr.

It was the Huskies who came out strong in the second half, dominating possession in the offensive zone. Finally putting shots on the board, it was a defensive miscue by the Phoenix in the 77th minute that allowed Michigan Tech’s Lexi Herrewig to steal the ball, dribble by a defender and beat keeper Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) one-on-one for the game winner.

For the match, Green Bay led in shots, 18-5, including 8-1 on goal. The Phoenix also led corner kicks, 5-1. Kernen finished with a game-high six shots, with three of those coming on goal.

Behle played the entire match and was not forced to make a save.

Green Bay will now enjoy the week off before starting its Horizon League slate against conference newcomer Oakland on Friday at 4 p.m.
