GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s tennis team (12-7, 2-0 HL) wrapped up the home portion of its 2014 schedule on Sunday morning with a 7-0 victory over UIC (3-8, 0-3 HL) at Western Racquet and Fitness Club. With the win, the Phoenix improved to a perfect 7-0 on its home court this season.

“We’re very happy with the outcome today and happy to be undefeated at home and in conference play,” Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas said. “I like the way our guys are playing and competing – especially today, when we were pushed in a number of matches and were still able to pull out victories in all of them.”

Green Bay started the day with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point, and then won each of the six singles battles to earn the sweep.

“After getting the doubles point, the goal was to come out strong in singles and try to get a 7-0 result,” Thomas said. “This was really the first time UIC has played with their full line-up this year, so we knew it could be a very competitive match, which it was. Give UIC credit, they played well and really challenged us today.”

The Phoenix grabbed convincing wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. Sophomores Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) teamed up for an 8-1 rout of Eric Pontow and Nate Campanile at No. 3 before Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) closed out their 8-2 win against Carl Hedstrom and Maurizio Feoli at the top spot.

Scott was the first to record a win in singles action, defeating UIC’s Isaac Lloveras 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Isaaks made it 3-0 Phoenix with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chris Cole at No. 5, and Tenzer clinched the win with his 7-6, 6-1 victory against Alexander Raa at No. 1.

After dropping his first set 6-3, sophomore Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) came from behind to defeat Hedstrom 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Junior Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) also picked up a three-set win on Sunday, knocking off Feoli 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in an intense battle at No. 6.

Green Bay will play its final four regular season contests away from home, starting with trips to Cleveland State (Saturday) and Youngstown State (Sunday) next weekend.
