Freshman Impresses as Women's Golf Opens 2012 Season

GREEN BAY, Wis. ( - Freshman Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.) had a sensational debut with the Green Bay women's golf team, sharing medalist honors at the Green Bay Shootout after a 2-over par 75 on Sunday at the par-73, 5930-yard Green Bay Country Club.

Pokrandt had a strong follow up to her impressive debut on Monday, shooting a 3-over 76 in more blustery conditions as the Phoenix opened the 36-hole Green Bay Invitational. Pokrandt is three shots off the lead and in a tie for sixth place entering Tuesday's final round, which gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Pokrandt carded a 2-under par 35 on the front nine on Sunday and finished with a 75 to equal Loyola's April Ohlendorf for medalist honors. Loyola shot a team score of 322 to best the Phoenix by 10 strokes.

Junior Grace Abitz (Appleton, Wis.) and sophomore Renee Christensen (Greenleaf, Wis.) had the next best Phoenix scores after shooting matching 10-over par 83s. Three other freshmen also debuted for the Phoenix on Sunday, with Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) carding an 85 and Lexi Wilson (Marinette, Wis.) and Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) shooting 89s.

Pokrandt made 13 pars and a birdie on Monday to put herself in contention to win the title in the 11-team, 64-golfer field. Starting on hole 10, the freshman played her first nine holes in 2-over 38 before playing the front nine at 1-over 38.

The Green Bay B team featured a balanced effort of four Phoenix golfers, with Laude leading the way with a 9-over 82 that featured matching 41s. Abitz had an 83, junior Jacki Johnson (Neenah, Wis.) carded an 84 and Christensen had an 85 with three birdies.

The B team is in eighth place after shooting 334 and is just seven shots out of the top-five. Indianapolis (306), Butler (316), Northern Illinois (320), North Dakota (322) and Chicago State (327) compile the top five in the field. The Green Bay A team is in 11th place after an opening-round 346.
