Green Bay Earns Runner-Up Finish at Loyola Invite

ALGONQUIN, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Playing in its final event prior to next weekend’s Horizon League Championship, the Green Bay women’s golf team earned a runner-up finish at the three-team Loyola Invitational on Sunday at the cold and windy Golf Club of Illinois. Freshman Katie Pokrandt (Eau Claire, Wis.) led the way for the Phoenix, finishing the 36-hole tournament in third place.
The Phoenix entered the day just one stroke behind the host Ramblers following Saturday’s opening round, but Loyola came out on top with a two-round score of 666 (336-330). Green Bay finished with a total of 682 (337-345) and UIC was third with 696 (347-349).
Pokrandt fired an opening-round score of 82 on Saturday before shooting an 86 on Sunday for a 36-hole total of 168. She finished 10 strokes behind individual champion April Ohlendorf (80-78=158) of Loyola and runner-up Carey Farley (84-82=166), also from the Ramblers.
Finishing just one stroke back from Pokrandt were two more Phoenix players, as junior Grace Abitz (Appleton, Wis.) (84-85) and freshman Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) (82-87) both carded 169s. Green Bay freshman Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) rounded out the top-10 with a 36-hole score of 174 (85-89).
Green Bay next heads to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., for the 2013 Horizon League Championship, held April 25-28.
