WATERLOO, Iowa. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– Looking to build on its performance at the Cougar Fall Invite, the Green Bay women’s tennis team showed vast improvement at the UNI Fall Invite over the weekend in Waterloo, Iowa, with three players picking up their first wins of the fall 2013 campaign. Freshman Carly Van Nuland (Kimberly, Wis.) led the way with an appearance in the T.C. Singles bracket consolation championship game.

“Overall the team is making good use of tournament experiences, and the team played with a lot more consistency than we did at Chicago State,” head coach Sara Schubring said.

Van Nuland suffered a hard-fought 7-5, 6-2 defeat in the first round of the T.C. Singles bracket before receiving a first-round bye on the consolation side. In the semifinal round, she flexed her muscles with a 6-2, 6-2 thumping of Western Illinois’ Jamee Hale to earn a berth in the bracket’s championship game. South Dakota’s Michelle Elkin came away with the upper hand in that round, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Sophomore Stephanie Londre (Burlington, Wis.) battled back to win her first-round matchup in the top-tier Purple Singles bracket. After losing the first set 6-2, Londre took the second set in commanding fashion with a 6-1 decision to force a tiebreaker. She easily handled her opponent to advance with a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) victory. She faced a tougher test in the next round, falling to Brooke Urzendowski of St. Louis, 6-1, 6-3.

Competing in the UNI Singles bracket, freshman Lauren Miketinac (Green Bay, Wis.) suffered a first-round loss before bouncing back with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Upper Iowa’s Vicki Kulbokas. UNI’s Jordyn Kearney ended Miketinac’s run in the ensuing round, however, with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

On the doubles side, Miketinac and freshman Claudia Negron (Lima, Peru) suffered a first-round loss in the Gold Doubles bracket before receiving a first-round bye on the consolation side. In the consolation semifinal round, the Phoenix tandem battled tough but was defeated by Bradley’s Dechter/McDonagh, 8-3.

Now at the midway point of the fall season, Green Bay will compete this weekend at the UW-Whitewater Fall Invite.
