GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay sophomore Nordic skier Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) has been selected to the Central Collegiate Ski Association's all-conference second team, the CCSA announced on Tuesday night. A total of 10 skiers were honored by the conference - five on the first team and five on the second team.
"It is very rewarding to see Kailey achieve this conference honor and she most definitely deserves it," first-year head coach Steve Teclaw said. "Going into the season (assistant coach) Tim Cook and I knew we had some talented athletes on the team and we knew we had to do our best to ensure their continued success. I think this award is a good benchmark for us as coaches and for Kailey that we are all on the right track of continual progression."
Mucha was the top skier for the Phoenix women in every race this season, highlighted by a second-place finish in the sprint finals in the first leg of the CCSA Championships on Feb. 2. The sophomore earned a pair of top-20 finishes at last weekend's second CCSA event in Minnesota, taking 14th in the 15-kilometer freestyle and 19th in the 5K classic.
Mucha placed in the top-10 in both of her races at the St. Scholastica Invitational Jan. 26-27, finishing eighth in the freestyle and ninth in the classic. She was also the lone Phoenix skier to make the trip to US Nationals in Midway, Utah, in early January, where she placed 52nd among 152 racers in the 1.3K sprint.
The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams will return to action this weekend (Feb. 23-24) at the NCAA Central Region Championships in Houghton, Mich.
