Nordic Ski Kicks Off Season at Michigan Tech Season Opener
HOUGTON, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Opening its 2013-14 season this weekend, the Green Bay men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams took to the Tech Trails at the Michigan Tech Season Opener in Houghton, Mich.
Originally scheduled to compete at Northern Michigan University, icy conditions at the Blueberry Ridge Ski Trails moved the competition to Michigan Tech. Freestyle races were held on Saturday, while classic races were on Sunday. No team scores were recorded.
In Saturday’s women’s freestyle race, Green Bay was led by a 12th-place finish by Bree Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska), who finished the course in 20:13. Mary Kozloski (Green Bay, Wis.) was the next finisher recording a 17th-place finish in 22:05. A trio of competitors rounded out the field for the Phoenix as Krista White (Waukesha, Wis.), Cassie Thobe (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Kayla Billett (Anoka, Minn.) finished in 19th (22:55), 20th (23:12) and 21st (23:28), respectively.
For the men in freestyle competition Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) led the way, finishing 10th in 35:50. Kyle Marshall (Roseville, Minn.) followed in 12th (36:01), Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) was 14th (36:05), Chris Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) finished 16th (36:33) and Phillip Anschutz (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) was 19th (37:40). Also taking to the trails for the Phoenix was Paul Choudoir (Custer, Wis.) who finished 23rd (41:38) and Chaz Perry (Waukesha, Wis.) who placed 26th (44:32).
On Sunday, the women’s top finisher in classic competition was again Mucha, who crossed the finish line in 19:57 to place 14th. Following her was Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) in 16th (20:19), White in 18th (21:35), Billett in 19th (22:00), Thobe in 21st (22:32) and Kozloski in 22nd (22:36).
Matt Nichols also paced the men in freestyle action, finishing 14th (34:20.2) after a three-way tiebreaker between him, Michigan Tech’s Jay Woodbeck (34:20.1, 13th) and teammate Marshall (34:20.7, 15th). Gurney took the 18th spot (35:41), Chris Nichols was 19th (36:22) and Anschutz was 20th (36.46). Choudoir (38:39, 23rd) and Perry (39:05, 24th) completed the list of competitors for the Phoenix.
The Phoenix returns to Houghton next weekend to take part in the Michigan Tech Challenge.
