Natalie Neuwirth Earns Horizon League Swimmer of the Week Honors
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After accumulating six total wins and helping the Phoenix to a championship at the IUPUI House of Champions Invitational over the weekend, Green Bay freshman Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) has been selected as the Horizon League Women’s Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
“I’m happy that Natalie had the opportunity to receive this honor,” Phoenix head coach Jim Merner said. “Just like all the other women on the team, she has been working hard toward her goals, and she is starting to realize that she is a very talented young lady. There are great things in store for Natalie, and she’s just starting to show what she is capable of doing. We’re very happy for her.”
Neuwirth was on four winning relay teams and also won two individual events as the Green Bay women ran away with the title at the three-day, eight-team House of Champions meet in Indianapolis. The Phoenix finished with 1,819 points, well clear of second-place IUPUI (1,391).
Neuwirth raced to solo wins in the 200-yard IM (2:05.98) and 400-yard IM (4:29.76), and also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:03.22). In relay action, the newcomer helped the 200 free (1:35.91), 400 free (3:30.17), 400 medley (3:50.93) and 800 free (7:36.07) relay squads to first-place finishes.
The Phoenix men and women are off from official competition until Jan. 11, when they host Horizon League foe UIC at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium.
