CLEVELAND (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the four-day 2014 Horizon League Championship meet on Wednesday, with both squads turning in a number of impressive performances at the Busbey Natatorium on the Cleveland State campus.

The men’s 200 medley relay team provided the highlight of the night for the Phoenix, claiming a Horizon League title in school-record fashion. The quartet of Evan Hill (Jefferson, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.), Cole Hackney (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Ben Loeffelholz (Dubuque, Iowa) raced out to a lead and out-touched Cleveland State (1:29.13) with a time of 1:29.00, breaking the old school record of 1:30.04 set in 2013. Korslin, Hackney and Loeffelholz were also members of the record-setting squad from a year ago.

The impressive victory marked the first relay win for the Phoenix men at a conference meet since 1996.

Loeffelholz also earned an individual school record on Wednesday. The junior led off the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 20.37, which broke the school standard of 20.48 in the 50-yard free previously held by Cory Carlson (2009). The relay team finished fifth with a time of 1:21.38, one second behind first-place Oakland (1:20.37).

Sophomore diver Tanner Nordlund (Rice, Minn.) recorded his best score of the year on the 3-meter board in the men’s B-final, tallying a total of 288.95 en route to a 10th-place finish.

The Phoenix women turned in a pair of fourth-place relay finishes on the opening day. First, Claire Walters (Northfield, Minn.), Samantha Rottel (New Berlin, Wis.), Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) combined for a time of 1:33.42 in the opening 200 free relay, and then Wolf teamed up with Emily Gomez (Burlington, Wis.), Autumn Roepsch (Dubuque, Iowa) and Haley Lucas (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) for a strong finish in the 200 medley relay (1:43.51).

Sophomore Anna Gomez (Burlington, Wis.) was the top individual finisher for the Phoenix on Wednesday, placing sixth in the 1000 freestyle in 10:17.79.

The Phoenix women concluded day one in fourth place in the eight-team field, while the men are in fifth out of seven teams in the early going.

Both squads return to action tomorrow at the Busbey Natatorium, with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. CT and finals starting at 4:30 p.m. CT. Finals will once again be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
