Willem Poelmans Named Horizon League Men's Swimmer of the Week
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay sophomore Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) picked up Horizon League Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors on Tuesday after winning five total events in a pair of Phoenix dual meet victories over the weekend.
It marks the first weekly award for Poelmans, who was named Horizon League Men’s Newcomer of the Year in 2013.
“This is a great honor, and I’m very happy for Willem,” Phoenix head coach Jim Merner said. “He has worked extremely hard over the last four months, had a great winter training trip and is performing incredibly well. I’m excited for him, and I’m getting anxious to see what he can do at the end of the year. We have some good goals set for him, and he’s really working hard toward those goals.”
In Friday’s victory over Horizon League foe Valparaiso, Poelmans won both the 200-yard IM (1:54.66) and the 100 breaststroke (58.87) to help the Phoenix to its fourth straight dual meet win. He followed that with a three-win performance in Saturday’s triumph over IUPUI, taking home victories in the 200 freestyle (1:43.27), the 500 freestyle (4:41.91) and the 400 medley relay (3:27.98). His 500 freestyle time was a season best.
Winners of five in a row, Poelmans and the Phoenix are now 5-2 in dual meets in 2013-14.
The weekly honor was the fourth of the season for Merner’s program, as the women’s squad already has three weekly award winners. Senior Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) has been recognized twice (Oct. 29 and Jan. 14), and freshman Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) was awarded on Nov. 26.
After three straight meets at home, the Green Bay men hit the road to participate in the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis on Sunday. The undefeated Phoenix women’s squad (8-0 dual meets, 17-0 overall) is back in action this Saturday, hosting Northern Michigan at 12 p.m. at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium.
