GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– Green Bay swimming and diving head coach Jim Merner has announced the addition of 10 student-athletes to his 2014-15 rosters, as five men and five women have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to join the Phoenix next fall.

Signees on the men’s side include Brian Borden (Brookfield, Wis./East HS), Noah Hanold (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods HS), Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg HS), Zachary Parkin (Middleton, Wis./Middleton HS) and Alec Rutkowski (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead HS).

“Signing five men in the early period has been awesome,” Merner said. “We need to pick up a couple more in the spring to make our team a little more well-rounded, but I’m very excited about the class that we have coming in so far. It’s a very nice group of young men that we’re glad to have in our program.”

Additions to the women’s squad are Tess Frey (Madison, Wis./Evansville HS), Stephanie Garvin (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East HS), Sydney Lloyd (Oswego, Ill./Oswego HS), Bailey Wagner (West Bend, Wis./West HS) and Marissa Warren (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield HS).

“I’m very happy that these five women have chosen to come to Green Bay,” Merner said. “This will not conclude our recruiting for the women’s team this year, but these five are going to make a difference immediately in our program for next season.”

Below are comments from Merner and diving coach Tom Stover on each future member of the Phoenix.

Brian Borden • Brookfield, Wis. (Brookfield East HS) • IM/Backstroke/Breaststroke
Merner on Borden – “Brian comes from the Elmbrook Swim Club, which is a great club program. He is a very talented multi-event swimmer. He’s great in the IM, backstroke and breaststroke events, and is also a good middle distance freestyler. He’s going to be a factor on this team for years to come, but beyond that he’s also young man who I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know in the recruiting process.”

Noah Hanold • Peoria, Ill. (Peoria Richwoods HS) • Breaststroke/IM
Merner on Hanold – “Noah is another young man that really fits the mold of the kind of person we’re looking for in our program. He is very talented in the breaststroke races, which we will need next year. I think Noah is going to step right in and really handle that role and show himself to be a very talented swimmer for us. I’m excited to have him.”

Chandler Lewis • Cedarburg, Wis. (Cedarburg HS) • Distance Freestyle
Merner on Lewis – “One area we could improve upon is our distance freestyle, and that’s exactly what Chandler can help us with. He’s an up-and-coming young man who I have really gotten to know over the last year, and I really like his character. He’s a tall kid, is very talented, and I think he’s going to help us become better in our distance events.”

Zachary Parkin • Middleton, Wis. (Middleton HS) • Freestyle/Butterfly/Backstroke
Merner on Parkin – “Zach really kind of jumped on to the scene in the last year, showing greatness in everything from the 50 free to the 200 free, the 100 fly to the 200 fly, as well as the 200 backstroke. I don’t know exactly where we’re going to use Zach, but he is a very talented swimmer.”

Alec Rutkowski • Dubuque, Iowa (Hempstead HS) • Backstroke/Butterfly/Sprint Freestyle
Merner on Rutkowski – “Alec is another swimmer from Dubuque, which has kind of become a pipeline for us. We see him helping us most in the backstroke and butterfly events, and I think he’s another young man who is going to develop into a pretty good swimmer for us. He has versatility in the sprints that we will look to expand into versatility in the 200s of those strokes.”

Tess Frey • Madison, Wis. (Evansville HS) • Sprint Freestyle/Backstroke
Merner on Frey – “Tess is a very good high school swimmer who is coming off of a very nice season. She is a tall young lady who is a sprint freestyler and backstroker. I have a good feeling that she is going to become pretty good. She loves the sport, she’s really excited about coming here to school and I think we’re going to see some great things from this young lady.”

Stephanie Garvin • West Chicago, Ill. (St. Charles East HS) • Distance Freestyle
Merner on Garvin – “What a wonderful addition Stephanie Garvin is to our program. She is going to be a standout freestyler for us – all the way from the 200 to the 1650, as well as some relay events. She’s very fast, had a great high school season this past year, and everything that she does is top-eight caliber at the Horizon League Championships.”

Sydney Lloyd • Oswego, Ill. (Oswego HS) • Butterfly/Backstroke
Merner on Lloyd – “Sydney is a very talented butterflyer, and the longer the race the better. She’s also a very good backstroker. These are all areas that we want to improve in, and signing Sydney was a very good thing for us.”

Bailey Wagner • West Bend, Wis. (West Bend West HS) • Diving
Stover on Wagner – “Bailey’s strong background in gymnastics provided excellent training for her success as a diver. She trained hard in the offseason before her senior campaign and built up some 3-meter experience, which translated into consistently higher scoring for her high school competitions. Bailey’s list of dives includes some with high degrees of difficulty, and that willingness to challenge herself will really pay off in college. She is a powerful athlete and an exceptional student. I expect Bailey to help our team right away as a freshman.”

Marissa Warren • Litchfield, Minn. (Litchfield HS) • Butterfly/Backstroke
Merner on Warren – “I’m very excited about adding this young lady to our squad. She’s a great butterflyer and backstroker who I hope is going to take our program to the next level in terms of the depth and versatility that she will bring with her events. I think she has a huge upside and that she’s going to get better and better throughout her college career.”
